Bandai Thundercats Tower of Omens Playset

I'm resigned to the idea that I will more than likely never own a Cat's Lair playset. I was truly hoping that we would get one with Funko after seeing the DC Primal Age set but after all of the production snafus, it seems like Funko is washing their hands of the scale. I hope I'm wrong.

Anyway, the original Cat's Lair is hard to get ahold of and the ones available online are hugely overpriced in my opinion. I've known about this playset from the 2011 series for a long time but now that I have the Funko figures it felt like a good time go for it. The scaling is NOT perfect at all but it does make a nice display piece. Plus, these are dirt cheap. I've seen some as low as $10.

Here is the completed set. Basically a giant cat's head, gate, and tower. The set has magnetic Thunderlynx features. If you use the intended figures, the doors will open automatically on the gate and the towers Cat symbol will light up with a voice yelling, "Thundercats, Ho!" This would be nice if they utilized either of the Lion-O voice actors, but this is just a generic voice.

As you can see, the door is a little too short for the Cats but the head is massive enough to still look nice.

The tower is massive but there isn't much to it.

Even when you open it up, it's basically a display piece. Not much play to this set.

You can at least pose figures along the top of the tower and it doesn't look TOO silly.

I'm thinking about adding something to the sides here. The little canopy makes nice seats for the cats. If I could add gunner or communication stations here, that would at least be something for them to do.

Right now, I've added some Schleich rock pieces to the sides. They add some size and a little oomph to the set. I also took the Batman training set from the Batcave. It works well if you think of the helmet as having cat ears.

You know a company realizes they are peddling a stinker when they throw in the freebies. In the case of the 2011 line, these are pretty cool. You get invisible Tygra, a catapult, and a vehicle. The vehicle is basically the Cat's Lair turned into a car. Almost depressing to see that and know that it isn't the playset you bought.

I added in Tygra so you can see just how out of scale these are for Funko. I know some of you would want to know.

Will It Motu or Notu? Schleich Big Knights Castle

Schleich has been around for quite while. They specialize in super detailed animals and fantasy creatures. More recently, they have been adding figurines and now "action figures". These toys are all pretty awesome and are in a 3 3/4 scale, like Star Wars and G.I. Joe. They have been making playsets and dioramas, as well, and a few of them really caught my eye. Since I have been on a vintage MOTU binge, my mind immediately began trying to figure out just how well these playsets would scale with my toys. I asked sellers on Amazon.com who responded negatively, but it didn't sit well with me. Being a toy collector for as long as I have been, my mind has become pretty adept at this. GoBots: Guardian Command Center

If there is one thing that gave GoBots a leg up on Transformers it was that they had playsets. They had two official, two unofficial, and one unproduced set. Playsets go a long way with me and if you've followed this blog for awhile that shouldn't be a surprise to you. Probably the most important GoBot playset was the Guardian Command Center. I never had one growing up but I did get a brand new one from Dallas Vintage Toys this week. There is always a magical feeling when you get something brand new. It is a little bit like time travel for the emotions. Everything here was brand new but unfortunately it had water damage, as you can see in the pictures. This wasn't a huge problem but it did cause me grief in the stickers department. The entire sheet had developed a few layers of grime from dust and being in a water damaged box. Custom Vultureman

With the apparent ending of Funko's Savage World, my dreams of MOTU scaled Thundercats seems to rest in my own ingenuity. To that end, I started google searching all the various MOTU scaled lines like Remco, Savage World, DC Primal Age, and ZOLO. I came across this guy who immediately jumped out at me as Vultureman: A few days of painting later and Vultureman is mostly complete! I still need to decide if I want to paint his tongue, add a skirt, and give him a weapon but I think he turned out wonderfully. The Mutant army continues to grow... ...and Castle Plun-Darr is getting fuller. I might need to start seeking out Mumm Ra's tomb or a good stand in for it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I don't think I need to spend any time letting readers know anything about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And that is to the franchise's compliment. Like EVERYONE else in the late 80's/early 90's I loved them and had many of their toys. As I got older, these were quickly passed on to my younger brothers who continue to love them as well. A few years ago, I was gearing up to lead my next session of Comic Book Club at my school and was eyeing TMNT as the focus. During the preparations for the upcoming sessions, I got that old toy hunting itch and started rebuilding my own collection. I'm by no means done as I'm still missing some vitals like April and Splinter and I've always wanted to build my own Triceraton army. Star Wars Power of the Force Wave 6 Collection

Here they are, the final wave of single figures from the Red Lightsaber Power of the Force 2 collection. It feels weird to know that I have the complete set and that I got them all brand new. As I've mentioned previously, this series was my Star Wars and they arrived in the aisle at the perfect time for my fandom. And being able to grow up with many vintage figures only raised my excitement for the Star Wars relaunch in 1995. My nine to eleven year old self is feeling an incredible sense of satisfaction. And the only thing that had made this collection even more gratifying has been the prices. I know a lot of people bought multiples of figures way back when, expecting to have a giant pay off in the future. I do have some pity for them but, moreso, I'm thankful that their efforts made the prices on these figures fantastic and what we could only wish all of our favorite toy lines still enjoyed.
