Bandai Thundercats Tower of Omens Playset

I'm resigned to the idea that I will more than likely never own a Cat's Lair playset. I was truly hoping that we would get one with Funko after seeing the DC Primal Age set but after all of the production snafus, it seems like Funko is washing their hands of the scale. I hope I'm wrong.

Anyway, the original Cat's Lair is hard to get ahold of and the ones available online are hugely overpriced in my opinion. I've known about this playset from the 2011 series for a long time but now that I have the Funko figures it felt like a good time go for it. The scaling is NOT perfect at all but it does make a nice display piece. Plus, these are dirt cheap. I've seen some as low as $10.

Here is the completed set. Basically a giant cat's head, gate, and tower. The set has magnetic Thunderlynx features. If you use the intended figures, the doors will open automatically on the gate and the towers Cat symbol will light up with a voice yelling, "Thundercats, Ho!" This would be nice if they utilized either of the Lion-O voice actors, but this is just a generic voice.

As you can see, the door is a little too short for the Cats but the head is massive enough to still look nice.

The tower is massive but there isn't much to it.

Even when you open it up, it's basically a display piece. Not much play to this set.

You can at least pose figures along the top of the tower and it doesn't look TOO silly.

I'm thinking about adding something to the sides here. The little canopy makes nice seats for the cats. If I could add gunner or communication stations here, that would at least be something for them to do.

Right now, I've added some Schleich rock pieces to the sides. They add some size and a little oomph to the set. I also took the Batman training set from the Batcave. It works well if you think of the helmet as having cat ears.

You know a company realizes they are peddling a stinker when they throw in the freebies. In the case of the 2011 line, these are pretty cool. You get invisible Tygra, a catapult, and a vehicle. The vehicle is basically the Cat's Lair turned into a car. Almost depressing to see that and know that it isn't the playset you bought.

I added in Tygra so you can see just how out of scale these are for Funko. I know some of you would want to know.

Toy Biz DC Superheroes Flash v2, Hawkman, Two Face

I started getting back into the DC Superheroes line early last year. Even though the Kenner Super Powers line is superior in a lot of ways, this line has a nostalgic value for me. Recently, I was able to add three more figures to my collection: Hawkman, Two Face, and the second version of the Flash! Version 2 is a HUGE upgrade over Version 1. V2 Flash doesn't rely on a wind up action feature so it actually has arm articulation. Now Flash can actually do some better posing... let alone throw a punch! V2 Flash also comes with a Quicksilver/Silver Surfer-esqe platform. It even moves forward on its own if you pull it backwards. Toy Biz vs Kenner. The Kenner figure is obviously the better choice. Funko Primal Age Batcave

With these toys hitting clearance prices, I decided to pick up the Batcave. You can tell from the above pictures, that the packaging is clearly evoking MOTU. Even with the cross sell on the back. Very nice artwork. However, what is on the inside is far cooler. First, let me say that all of the details on this playset are amazing. And, despite what you may have heard, this is some pretty good plastic and has some weight to it. Now, I am not a fan of the Primal Age series but I plan on using this as a stand in for Castle Plun Darr. I really like that standing area behind the Bat's head. The Cave opens up just like Castle Grayskull and as some really nice features. The spine/ladder is really well made with nice details and it has some weight to it. I love the depth of the dungeon. Star Wars Power of the Force Shadows of the Empire Vehicles Outrider and Slave One

Shadows the Empire was an amazing period in Star Wars history. It's sad that the overall story was just tossed to the side like it was meaningless. I could understand a reworking of certain story elements but just treating it like it never existed was such a blow for me. Thankfully, I will always have the memories and, for now, I have the toys. I didn't have either of these vehicles growing up. I've mentioned in previous blogs how I favored getting multiple figures over a single vehicle when visiting the toy store but that did not mean that I did not want them. I think my favorite feature is the open up cargo area that helps this ship tread the line between vehicle and playset. Super 7 The Three Terrors

Like many of you, I wasn't too impressed when Super 7 unveiled their Three Terrors figures. There was something off about them and I had just endured the ending of Mattel's side of Masters of the Universe Classics. Maybe I had some action figure fatigue. Either way, I skipped them. I was a fan of the their Curse of the Three Terrors short. It wasn't perfect but I liked the idea of a new ancient faction of undead warriors and their new hidden leader that was teased. The new Savage World Thundercats, however, has really reinvigorated my vintage figure spirit so I decided to finally pick these up. Super 7 has them on their site for $20 apiece. Star Wars Power of the Force Deluxe Red Card Figures - Luke with Desert Sport Skiff, Han Solo with Smuggler Flight Pack, and Crowd Control Stormtrooper

When it comes to the 1990's Kenner Star Wars relaunch, there are a lot of things people love and a lot of things people hate. The Deluxe assortment was something I absolutely loved. These kinds of figures showcased Star Wars as a toy line vs a collector's line. And Kenner wasn't new to these types of gimmicks. Just one look at their Batman line and these things make complete sense. Unfortunately, I don't think everyone else felt the same way. The first wave of these figures were brand new concepts that felt like they could belong in the universe. The second wave that would come with the Green cards gave us more things that actually existed in the films, save one. I can only imagine what a deluxe Chewbacca or Darth Vader could have come with. My only complaint about these toys is that all of the backpack accessories will only fit VERY few figures. This is because they were made to insert into a medium sized hole in their back.
