Funko Savage World Thundercats Wave 2

2018 was an exciting time for me because we finally received Thundercats in the same scale as Masters of the Universe! It was a dream come true for myself and, I'm sure, many other children of the 80's. The excitement was unfortunately short lived as the factory that Funko worked with screwed up the plastics used on hip articulation. Many figure arrived with broken or soon to be broken crotches and Funko was dealt a pretty serious black eye.

However, they worked hard to fix that issue but that also pushed back Wave 2 of Thundercats over a year. During that time, they went ahead with a mass market retail approach for a DC Comics universe in the Savage World style. While there were some nice toys in this line, especially the Bat Cave, the overall appeal to general audiences didn't seem to be there. A lot of planned Savage World lines seemed to get axed because of the gamble not paying off.

Thankfully, Thundercats Wave 2 made the cut and began arriving this past quarter. Personally, I wish Funko never tried to take that leap with DC figures. Toys are a niche market these days and I don't think anything will change that. Its like trying to sell chalkboards to people who have a tablet. I hope that this Thundercats wave sells well enough to encourage Funko to not give up on the Savage World concept and to especially give us MORE Thundercats! With Mattel bringing back their 5.5 MOTU line, maybe there is hope to feel more of the magic and the roar.

As far as this wave is concerned, zero hip/crotch issues. None. Nada. Everything is fixed in that department. The only problem I noticed was just something that doesn't really matter and that is product serial numbers. Wave 1 had the numbers printed under the boot of the figures whereas this wave has them printed on their backs. They definitely stand out but I can overlook them, especially considering that these figures aren't breaking.

Mega Construx MOTU Castle Grayskull

So, I finally picked up the Mega Construx Castle Grayskull. Amazon had it listed for $189 so I jumped on it. One bit of sad news, I like keeping box art but Amazon has a hassle-free shipping service where they just ship the box as is. I love Amazon but I am not a fan of this service as they put shipping labels all over the front of the box, ruining it. Luckily, the inside of the box delivered something even better... How cool is that? So everything worked out in the end. The packaging by Mega Construx is actually very cool. All of the pieces to the Castle came in these great cardboard boxes... Again, very cool. The vintage cross sell on the covers was a very nice touch. The manual included all of the cover art inserted throughout so if you wanted to toss the box, you didn't have to feel bad about it. 30th Anniversary Tribute to the New Adventures of He-Man

This year marks the 30th Anniversary to the New Adventures of He-Man. I never cared for the show as a child. It was just too different: different themes, different characterizations, different characters, different voices, different settings, etc. It was just too much change to accept. I did like the action figures. I still remember when my brother and I found He-man and Skeletor at a Kay Bees. We loved them and even bought a Flipshot because we thought it was Man at Arms. As the years went on, it really bugged me that I didn't care for the show. I mean, what is not to like? You've got He-man... fighting Skeletor... in space... with a lightsaber. Toy Biz Marvel Superheroes Custom Nick Fury, Havok, and Quicksilver

I love the early Toy Biz line, from DC and Marvel Superheroes to the X-Men. Unfortunately, the later into the 90s you go, the larger and dumber some of the sculpts became. Yikes. So, I try to stick mainly to the early years or figures that fit to that scale. And if I can't find what I want, a custom is the way to go. By the way, if you want a quick base for a custom, the Toy Biz Daredevil unscrews so you don't need to crack his torso. Nick Fury is one of those figures that goes just a tad too large in comparison to the early figures. Its a shame because they did an awesome job. In creating mine, I decided to go into the MCU/Ultimates direction. He uses a Daredevil torso, Punisher arms and legs, a JLU John Stewart head, and a JLU gun holster. I think it turned out pretty well. Plus, I now have a basic idea to create any SHIELD figure. Quicksilver was another one that Toy Biz did a nice job with. Kre-O G.I. Joe Custom Overlord and Dictator

When I was a kid, I lost more than my fair share of G.I. Joes. Two however, have stuck in my memory because of how much I enjoyed playing with them.  The first wasn't even truly a G.I. Joe. He was from the U.S. Forces line by Remco: Tigerclaw. The second, wasn't a G.I. Joe either, he was a Cobra: Overlord. Obviously, I had a thing for masked characters with claws.  Anyway, I'd been wanting to add Overlord to my Kre-O collection.
